98 Kangaroos Killed: Suspect Arrested
A man has been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly shooting and killing 98 kangaroos in New South Wales, Australia, as stated by police.

The remains of the marsupials, along with boxes of ammunition and spent cartridges, were discovered near the town of Singleton in the Hunter Valley in October.

In a statement released on Monday, New South Wales police reported that a 43-year-old man was arrested and charged with six offenses, which include committing an act of aggravated cruelty against animals and harming a protected species.

The suspect has been granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in court on January 13. The police statement did not provide details on the potential motivations behind his actions.

Kangaroos are among Australia’s most iconic animals and are classified as protected native wildlife under the Nature Conservation Act of 1992.

In a related case from 2021, two teenage boys pleaded guilty to deliberately killing 14 kangaroos in New South Wales. The boys, then 17, reportedly drove their vehicles into the animals “without any real rationale other than a brain explosion,” as cited by a magistrate.

Each faced one count of recklessly beating and killing animals, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in jail. After pleading guilty, they were referred to a young offenders’ conference, and the charges against them were reportedly dismissed afterward.

Under New South Wales law, those found guilty of animal cruelty can face up to five years in prison and a fine of A$22,000.

Official statistics referenced by the Sydney Morning Herald indicate that over the last five years, only 4.2% of animal cruelty cases have resulted in prison sentences.
