15 Interpol Nations Collaborate to Track Down WWII Nazi SS Veteran – Moscow
Yaroslav Hunka, a Waffen-SS veteran who was honored by Canada's parliament, is currently wanted in Russia for numerous murders.

According to the Russian Interior Ministry's announcement on Monday, 15 Interpol member states have joined efforts to locate and extradite Hunka. The 99-year-old gained notoriety for his appearance in the Canadian parliament as a guest during Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky's visit last year. Hunka's unit, which committed atrocities against Jews and Poles on the Eastern Front during World War II, received a standing ovation, prompting an apology from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Following attempts to extradite him, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office revealed last week that Hunka had been added to Interpol's database, stating that Moscow would seek his extradition if he traveled outside Canada.

As of Monday, the Russian Interior Ministry indicated that 15 Interpol member states have pledged to arrest Hunka should he enter their jurisdictions.

“All war criminals who committed bloody atrocities against civilians will receive the punishment they deserve,” the ministry stated. “After all, there is no statute of limitations for such crimes.”

Hunka served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, also known as the Galicia Division, established by Nazi authorities in 1943, primarily composed of Ukrainian recruits from what is now western Ukraine and eastern Poland.

The Russian government has accused Hunka of participating in the murders of at least 500 Soviet citizens.

Before the standing ovation, Hunka was introduced by House Speaker Anthony Rota as “a Ukrainian hero, a Canadian hero… who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Russians.”

While the Russian Interior Ministry did not disclose the full list of countries supporting the extradition, Poland has been advocating for Hunka's extradition since last year. Additionally, the head of Israel’s Anti-Fascist Movement recently called on any country “that harbors this criminal” to turn him over.
