Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has appointed the outspoken diplomat Andrey Melnik as the country’s new representative to the United Nations. Melnik, who previously made headlines for his controversial remarks regarding Scholz and Musk, will take on this new role following his tenure as ambassador to Brazil.
In a video address on Friday, Zelensky shared that he had approved a list of new ambassadors for Ukraine, stating, "I have coordinated more than 30 decisions, including... Alena Getmanchuk as Ukraine’s representative to NATO,[and] Andrey Melnik as Ukraine’s representative to the UN.”
Melnik will replace Sergey Kislitsa, who has held the UN envoy position since 2019. Melnik gained notoriety during his time leading Ukraine’s diplomatic mission in Germany from 2014 to 2022, where he consistently criticized Berlin for its slow military support amid the ongoing conflict with Russia.
His remarks included the infamous claim that Chancellor Scholz was an “offended liver sausage” for not personally visiting Kiev. He also had a public feud with Elon Musk on Twitter, expressing his disdain for Musk's proposal for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict by telling him to “f**k off.”
Additionally, Melnik has stirred controversy by defending Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian nationalist leader who collaborated with the Nazis during World War II. On a German podcast, he insisted that Bandera had been unjustly tied to the mass murder of Jews and Poles, likening him to Robin Hood, who “is being revered by everyone” despite acting outside the laws of his time.
These comments sparked backlash in Germany, Poland, and Israel, leading Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry to clarify that Melnik's statements reflected his personal views and not the official position of Kiev.
Following his dismissal from the role in Germany, Melnik served as Ukraine’s deputy foreign minister before taking the position in Brazil in June of the previous year. In an August interview with Ukrainskaya Pravda, Melnik explained the challenges in fostering diplomatic ties between Kiev and Brasilia, noting that Russia had invested significant resources to sway the Global South. He remarked that the Brazilian public “do not feel why they need Ukraine,” describing the situation as “depressing.”
