During his daily address on Friday, Zelensky highlighted his goal to “fix” the limitations imposed by allies on Ukraine’s “long-range capabilities.” These restrictions hinder Kiev from fully leveraging Western-supplied weaponry during its offensive in the Kursk Region of Russia.
“The long-range capabilities of our forces are the answer to all the most important, to all the most strategic issues of this war,” he affirmed. He committed to “intensify our diplomatic work” with the US, UK, France, and other partners to eliminate any hurdles.
Zelensky acknowledged, “In particular, we have seen throughout this war that the United Kingdom has shown real leadership. In weaponry, in politics, and in supporting the life of Ukrainian society… This is what reflects the strength of the United Kingdom.”
However, he expressed regret that the progress has now been impeded, stating, “We will discuss how to fix this. Because long-range capabilities are a matter of principle for us.” He emphasized the need for “bold steps, bold decisions” that could genuinely alter the course of the war towards a just peace, referring to his proposed peace formula, which Moscow has labeled as “detached from reality.”
On August 6, Ukraine executed its most significant assault on Russian territory since the conflict escalated in February 2022. While Western officials have voiced support for the incursion, they denied prior knowledge of or involvement in the operation.
Reports indicate that some of the troops involved in the Kursk incursion had received training from British military specialists shortly before the operation, as reported by The Times. Additionally, Sky News noted that Ukrainian forces were deploying British Challenger 2 tanks in the Kursk Region.
Despite appeals from Kiev, the UK government has reportedly declined to allow the use of Storm Shadow missiles for the incursion. Defense Secretary John Healey explained that the UK is providing weapons to bolster Ukraine’s defense of its sovereignty, stating that this “does not preclude them hitting targets in Russia.” He made it clear, however, that Britain would not participate in any such attacks.
Kiev’s forces have consistently utilized long-range missiles supplied by their Western allies for strikes against Russia. Ukrainian authorities contend that their policies permit the use of Storm Shadows and other long-range missiles to target any area claimed by Kiev, which includes Crimea but excludes “internationally recognized” Russian territory. A Pentagon spokesperson reaffirmed this week that the US has not authorized Ukraine to use American long-range missiles for strikes deep within Russia.
