YouTube prohibits channels allegedly linked to Russia and right-wing groups
YouTube has taken action to remove five right-wing political channels linked to allegations of a Russian campaign that aims to create division in the United States and influence its domestic matters.

In a statement referenced by the Washington Post on Thursday, the video hosting platform owned by Google announced it had “terminated” the accounts of Tenet Media and four other groups associated with conservative commentator Lauren Chen, as part of its efforts “to combat coordinated influence operations.”

This decision follows the DOJ's announcement on Wednesday, which involved charges against two Russians identified as employees of RT, for violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, money laundering, and the illegal transfer of millions to US-based entities to propagate a so-called ‘Russian narrative’ on various divisive political issues.

Although the DOJ did not explicitly name the firm linked to these activities, it mentioned that the unidentified company, based in Tennessee, had uploaded around 2,000 videos since its inception in November 2023. Observers and social media users generally speculate that this refers to Tenet Media.

Founded by Chen and her spouse Liam Donovan in early 2022, Tenet Media often showcases right-wing influencers discussing topics including immigration, inflation, and foreign policy.

In response to the indictment, Blaze Media, a conservative outlet, announced that it had ended a contract with Chen, who they described as “an independent contractor,” without offering any further details regarding the justification for this decision.

Additionally, the US Treasury Department on Wednesday imposed sanctions on several Russian nationals, including RT Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan and three other senior staff members from RT, in relation to alleged actions aimed at influencing the US elections.

Reacting to the new sanctions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized the measures, stating that they “testify to the irreversible degradation of the democratic state in the United States and its transformation into a totalitarian neoliberal dictatorship.”
