Polish MEP Expelled for ‘Jewish genocide’ Remark
Grzegorz Braun called for a prayer for people killed in Gaza during a Holocaust commemorations at the EU Parliament.

Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun urged his colleagues to “pray for the victims of the Jewish genocide in Gaza” while observing a moment of silence for Holocaust victims on Wednesday. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola promptly requested that he leave the chamber.

The Israeli government initiated a large military operation in Gaza following Hamas' incursion into Israeli territory in October 2023, which resulted in over 1,100 deaths and 240 hostages. By the time a ceasefire was reached earlier this month, the Israel Defense Forces had reportedly caused at least 46,000 fatalities in the Palestinian enclave, according to health authorities controlled by Hamas.

Following his removal from the European Parliament’s Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony, the MEP from Poland’s right-wing Confederation alliance stated in a post on X that he hadn’t intended to “disturb” the event, but rather “supplemented” it.

His actions drew significant criticism from various lawmakers, including those from Poland.

The European Jewish Congress also condemned Braun’s behavior as a “vile display of antisemitism in the heart of European democracy” in a post on X.

Braun attracted attention in December 2023 when he used a fire extinguisher to extinguish Hanukkah candles at a ceremony in the Polish parliament. He claimed at that time that “there can be no place for the acts of this racist, tribal, wild Talmudic cult on these premises.”

In December 2023, Irish MEP Clare Daly from the left-wing Independents 4 Change party criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for supporting a “brutal apartheid regime that she calls a ‘vibrant democracy.’”

Earlier, Spanish Social Rights Minister Ione Belarra criticized the EU for its perceived inaction regarding what she termed “genocide” in Gaza.

While some EU member states made symbolic moves to support the Palestinians, including official recognition of their state, Von der Leyen has been a strong supporter of Israel.

Commenting on the EU’s position in November 2023, the Turkish Foreign Ministry reminded the bloc that “policies based on universal values, international law, and humanitarian principles cannot be limited to Ukraine… but must be pursued universally, including in the Middle East.”
