Media reports: Leak found at Russian oil pipeline in Poland
A section of the Druzhba pipeline, which links the Polish city of Plock to oil refineries in Germany, has reportedly sustained damage.

An oil spill was reported on a stretch of the Russian Druzhba pipeline near Pniewy, a town in western Poland, as stated by the broadcaster TVN24 late on Sunday, citing information from the local fire department.

According to the outlet, the spill was detected earlier that day after residents in the area noted a strong scent of petroleum on the outskirts of the town.

Martin Halasz, a spokesman for the fire service, informed the news outlet that firefighters who arrived at the scene found a “substance resembling oil” in a nearby field along the pipeline's route. Following this discovery, the fire department notified PERN, Poland’s state-owned pipeline operator, which confirmed the presence of a leak.

A representative from PERN, who also arrived at the location, indicated that the pipeline had been shut down while maintenance teams were assessing the damage and investigating the cause of the spill. It remains uncertain whether the damage was caused by human activity.

The fire department reported that there was no risk of fire or explosion resulting from the leak.

Constructed in the 1960s, the Druzhba pipeline features two branches that together span approximately 4,000 km, linking Russian and Kazakh oil suppliers with consumers in Europe.

The section experiencing the leak connects the PERN oil supply base near Plock in central Poland with two oil refineries in Germany, forming part of the northern branch. This pipeline diverges in Mozyr, Belarus, with the northern segment leading to Poland and Germany, while the southern branch runs to Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Although the flow of oil from Russia along the northern branch was halted due to EU sanctions imposed in early 2023, Kazakh oil has been transported to Germany via this route since December.
