Wealth of Russia's Richest Surges Significantly – Bloomberg
The wealth of the country's richest individuals increased by $31 billion this year, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, despite facing unprecedented sanctions pressure.

As of September 30, 25 Russian billionaires feature in the global ranking of the 500 wealthiest people.

Vladimir Potanin, the owner of mining giant Norilsk Nickel, retained his position as Russia’s wealthiest individual, ranking 56th overall. The nickel magnate reportedly saw his wealth rise by $1.57 billion in the first three quarters of the year, bringing his total to $32.6 billion.

Vladimir Lisin, the chairman of NLMK and Russia's largest steelmaker, ranks second. He added $4.27 billion to his fortune this year, with an estimated net worth of $28.2 billion. At the year's beginning, Bloomberg had placed Lisin fourth among Russia's richest.

In third place is Vagit Alekperov, the former head of Russian energy giant Lukoil, from which he still retains a significant ownership stake. Bloomberg indicates that Alekperov has gained nearly $3 billion this year, increasing his net worth to $27.5 billion.

The most significant wealth increase was recorded by Andrey Melnichenko, the founder of fertilizer producer EuroChem and thermal coal supplier Suek. He is now Russia’s sixth-richest individual and saw a rise of over $6 billion from January to September, leading to a total wealth of $25 billion, as per Bloomberg's estimates.

Potanin, Alekperov, and Melnichenko are among many Russian businessmen affected by unprecedented Western sanctions following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, ranks 310th on the Bloomberg list with a net worth of $9.07 billion. The tech entrepreneur, who was detained in France in August and faces several charges, reported a loss of $85 million. The allegations against Durov include non-cooperation with authorities and managing a platform supposedly used by criminals. The legal case remains ongoing.

Tatyana Bakalchuk, Russia’s richest woman and the founder and CEO of the largest online retailer Wildberries, has seen her wealth grow by an estimated $3 billion, bringing her total net worth to $8.51 billion. Recently, she changed back to her maiden name, Kim, after a contentious property dispute with her estranged husband, which culminated in a tragic shooting outside the Wildberries headquarters in Moscow last month.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index claims to rank the world’s 500 richest individuals based on the share prices of the companies in which they own stakes. The index indicates that top Russian billionaires collectively gained an additional $50 billion in 2023.
