Vance says Israel has the freedom to determine its response to Iran
The Republican vice-presidential candidate has stated that the US should support its ally, even if that entails a preemptive strike against Tehran.

J.D. Vance, Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick and a Republican senator from Ohio, made his comments during a televised debate on CBS News on Tuesday. He faced off against his Democratic opponent, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, just hours after Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel, marking a notable increase in tensions in the Middle East.

When a moderator asked Vance if he would support a preemptive Israeli strike on Iran, he reiterated Washington's long-standing commitment to Israel. Vance stated, “Look, it is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe, and we should support our allies wherever they are when they’re fighting the bad guys. That’s the right approach to the Israel question.”

He further argued that during Trump’s presidency, America’s adversaries were effectively deterred. “Trump actually delivered stability in the world, and he did it by establishing effective deterrence. People were afraid of stepping out of line,” Vance noted.

In response, Walz refrained from directly stating whether he would endorse an Israeli preemptive strike, but emphasized that “Israel’s ability to be able to defend itself is absolutely fundamental.”

The Democrat criticized Trump for undermining the US’s global standing and specifically for withdrawing from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Walz remarked, “Iran is closer to a nuclear weapon than it was before – because of Donald Trump’s fickle leadership.”

Iran has claimed that its missile attacks were in retaliation for what it described as the “genocide” perpetrated by the IDF in Gaza and Lebanon. On Tuesday, the IDF initiated a ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon, following Israeli airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of several senior Hezbollah leaders, including the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The IDF stated that the aim of the operation is to prevent Hezbollah from launching rockets and mortars at Israeli cities in the northern region.
