There has been no official confirmation from either Washington or London regarding the incidents on Sunday.
The Houthis contend that their actions resulted in the downing of an F/A-18 Super Hornet as a response to prior US and UK strikes on Sanaa on Saturday evening. Military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed that the operation “has been thwarted through a strategic military operation targeting” the USS Harry S. Truman and its accompanying destroyers, utilizing eight cruise missiles and 17 drones.
However, this assertion was challenged by the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which reported that the aircraft’s loss was due to a "friendly fire" incident involving the USS Gettysburg. An investigation is currently in progress to clarify the circumstances surrounding the event.
According to CENTCOM, on Saturday, US forces conducted airstrikes on a "missile storage facility and a command-and-control center" managed by the Houthis, in addition to intercepting several unmanned aerial vehicles and an anti-ship cruise missile over the Red Sea.
The Houthis, a Shia Islamist group that controls a significant portion of Yemen, have been attacking Israel-linked commercial shipping in the Red Sea since October last year as a reaction to Israel’s bombardment of Gaza.
Following Israel’s declaration of war on Hamas in Gaza, the Yemeni group has launched missiles or drones at over 80 merchant ships. This escalation came in the wake of a series of lethal Hamas raids into Israel. Initially targeting vessels tied to Israel, the Houthis broadened their attacks to US and UK vessels after Anglo-American airstrikes in January.
The Houthis have aimed at Western warships in the area and claim to have launched missiles directly at Israel multiple times, portraying their operations as expressions of solidarity with the Palestinians.
