US to 'take over' Gaza, says Trump
The US president has announced a plan to demolish the Palestinian enclave of Gaza and transform it into what he calls the “Riviera of the Middle East” for the “people of the world.”

US President Donald Trump has proposed that the United States take control of Gaza, committing to rebuild the war-torn area and create economic opportunities for future residents. When questioned about the potential deployment of US troops, Trump indicated a willingness to “do what is necessary.”

These comments came on Tuesday during Trump’s meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The president reiterated his stance that Palestinians should be permanently resettled elsewhere, adding that the US would “take over” Gaza to lead efforts in addressing the devastation caused by 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“The US will take over the Gaza Strip. And we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump stated, pledging to “level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings.”

When asked for clarification on the concept of a “takeover,” Trump expressed his vision for a “long-term ownership position,” asserting that it would supposedly bring “great stability” to the entire Middle East. “Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing it, and creating thousands of jobs,” he claimed.

Trump also mentioned that he is not ruling out the possibility of deploying US troops to support his plan for Gaza. “We’ll do what is necessary. If it’s necessary, we’ll do that. We’re going to take over that place,” he asserted.

According to the UN, approximately 92% of homes in Gaza have been destroyed or severely damaged, and around 1.9 million people – more than 90% of Gaza’s population – have been displaced since the conflict began in October 2023. Trump, known for his real estate background, has often referred to Gaza as a “demolition site” in recent discussions.

When asked who would inhabit Gaza after the US “takes over” and redevelops it, and if Palestinians would be allowed to return, Trump replied: “I envision… the world’s people living there. I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable. And I think the entire world, representatives from all over the world, will be there and they’ll live there… Palestinians also.”

“I don’t want to be a wise guy. But the Riviera of the Middle East – this could be so magnificent,” he added.
