US state media reports EU's skepticism regarding deployment of peacekeepers to Ukraine
According to sources cited by US state-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the likelihood of EU member states deploying peacekeepers in Ukraine appears low, particularly in the absence of American involvement.

An unnamed EU diplomat explained, “There are two reasons why you shouldn’t believe that European soldiers will be on Ukrainian territory. First, the Russians will not accept it. Second, it will be hard to sell this to the European population.” The diplomat further noted that the prospect of sending Western troops to “die in Ukraine” would benefit “populists.”

Another unnamed EU official expressed similar skepticism, remarking that while the idea of deploying foreign soldiers is appealing, the resistance observed in countries like the Czech Republic and Poland—nations expected to contribute many troops—indicates it would be “a hard sell.”

Additionally, an EU diplomat indicated to RFE/RL that Ukraine faces “a rough landing” in the next year, stating, “There are no good scenarios.” This comment hints at a potential trajectory resembling the 2014-2015 Minsk agreements, which momentarily halted significant hostilities in Donbass.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has identified Ukraine’s failure to uphold the Minsk accords as a fundamental reason behind the ongoing conflict. Both Russia and Ukraine have thus far dismissed the notion of an unconditional ceasefire.

Various reports suggest that European leaders have deliberated the possibility of sending peacekeepers following a ceasefire. PMG magazine noted that French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish leader Donald Tusk were set to discuss the topic during their meeting in Warsaw earlier this month. Afterward, Tusk informed reporters that Poland does not intend to engage in such actions. Meanwhile, French officials have previously suggested sending military instructors and personnel to assist with demining efforts.

Russia has consistently warned that it would view any Western soldiers in Ukraine as legitimate targets. Putin has emphasized that foreign military assistance to Kiev already amounts to NATO’s direct involvement in the conflict.
