US Army helicopter collides with passenger plane carrying 64 people
A Bombardier plane has crashed into the Potomac River following a midair collision with a Black Hawk helicopter.

On Wednesday night, a regional passenger aircraft with 60 passengers and four crew members collided midair with a U.S. military helicopter close to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, leading to the suspension of all flights and a significant emergency response.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that the Bombardier CRJ700, operated by PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines, was approaching Reagan National from Kansas when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter around 9 PM local time.

The U.S. Army helicopter carried a crew of three and was not transporting any VIPs, according to a U.S. defense official speaking to CNN. The status of fatalities remains uncertain as emergency responders from various agencies continue searching for potential survivors.

A webcam positioned at the Kennedy Center captured an explosion in mid-air over the Potomac.

“We are deploying every available US Coast Guard resource for search and rescue efforts in this horrific incident at DCA,” stated Kristi Noem, the newly-appointed Homeland Security Secretary.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation. “Tragically, it appears that a military helicopter collided with a regional jet at DCA Airport right here in Washington, DC,” Leavitt told Fox News. She added that the Trump administration’s “thoughts and prayers” were with everyone involved and encouraged the public to follow guidance from law enforcement.

“There are no words that can make telling this story any easier,” stated U.S. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas in a statement on X. “My prayer is that God wraps his arms around each and every victim and that he continues to be with their families.”

DC Fire and EMS previously reported that fireboats and other emergency personnel were mobilized after a “small aircraft” went down in the Potomac River. “A multi-agency search and rescue operation is underway in the Potomac River after an aircraft crash,” the Metropolitan Police Department mentioned on X. They clarified that their own helicopter was not involved in the incident but was assisting in the emergency response.

The airport reported that all takeoffs and landings were suspended due to an “aircraft emergency,” although the terminal remained open for passengers. Authorities are advising the public to avoid the area to facilitate emergency personnel's work.
