Originally, the Russian city was set to host the annual fixture between the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League winners on August 16. However, UEFA has opted to change the venue due to ongoing sanctions against Russia that were implemented shortly after military actions in Ukraine began.
Last year, Russia lost its rights to host the 2022 UEFA Champions League final for similar reasons. Initially scheduled in Saint Petersburg, the event was moved to Paris’ Stade de France following an emergency meeting of UEFA's executive committee.
In that final, Real Madrid ultimately triumphed over Liverpool.
The UEFA Super Cup will now be held at the Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, the home ground of the Greek club Olympiacos.
Since February, Russian teams have been banned from competing in UEFA and FIFA competitions following a recommendation from the International Olympic Committee, which has also advised against Russia hosting international sporting events.
In addition, UEFA announced an expansion of its Nations League competition, introducing a quarterfinal stage for League A group winners and runners-up. This stage will take place over two legs in March, leading to the final four in May.
“The introduction of the UEFA Nations League was a success story, replacing friendly games with more competitive matches,” said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.
“And now, by introducing the new knock-out phase, teams will be given even more opportunities to progress while keeping the same number of games within the International Match Calendar.
“The new format promises to bring more excitement to Europe’s national team football competitions that continue to grow from strength to strength.”
