Trump wishes Scott 'good luck' with presidential campaign

Former President Donald Trump wished Sen. Tim Scott “good luck” with his presidential campaign Monday while also taking another swipe at Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

“Good luck to Senator Tim Scott in entering the Republican Presidential Primary Race,” Trump wrote on Truth Social minutes before Scott declared his candidacy to a crowd at Charleston Southern University Monday morning. “It is rapidly loading up with lots of people.”

The South Carolina senator filed his required paperwork last Friday, entering a growing list of declared GOP presidential hopefuls that includes Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and Asa Hutchinson.

In the same post, Trump took another shot at DeSantis — who is expected to announce his own presidential campaign as soon as this week.

“Tim is a big step up from Ron DeSanctimonious, who is totally unelectable,” he added.

DeSantis has consistently lagged behind Trump in polls on hypothetical GOP presidential matchups, and the former president has repeatedly slammed the governor on social media and in interviews.

Trump allies see the crowding primary field as an advantage, hoping that candidates like Scott will splinter the vote away from DeSantis.

“I really say the more the merrier. I mean, they think they did a good job,” Trump said of other candidates in his CPAC speech in March. “They’re very ambitious people, but they think they did a good job.”

Scott, a former insurance agent and the South’s first Black senator since Reconstruction, was polling in lower single digits earlier in May.
