Trump to Zelensky: ‘You should’ve never started’ this war
US President Donald Trump expressed disappointment in Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on Tuesday after complaints arose from Kiev regarding their exclusion from US-Russia peace talks in Saudi Arabia. While at his Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump told reporters that Zelensky should have taken action to resolve the conflict, claiming it was one he “should’ve never started.”

Trump’s comments came after a significant meeting in Riyadh that sparked anger from both the EU and Ukraine for their lack of invitation. Zelensky condemned the meeting as “disreputable,” criticizing the US for “helping Putin get out of years of isolation” and portraying Russia as “a victim.” He emphasized Ukraine's intention to reject any outcomes from the Saudi negotiations.

In his response, Trump argued that Zelensky and Ukrainian officials had no right to voice grievances about their absence from the talks. He further criticized Zelensky for not having resolved the ongoing conflict despite having ample time to do so.

“Today I heard, ‘We weren’t invited.’ Well, you’ve been there for three years, you should’ve ended it… You should’ve never started it. You could’ve made a deal,” Trump stated.

The US president expressed optimism about the negotiations with Russia, asserting that they were progressing positively. He claimed to have “the power to end this war” to “save lives.”

Both Moscow and Washington have characterized the talks as productive, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noting that the delegations were “quite successful” in enhancing relations. He remarked that the sides “not only listened, but also heard each other,” indicating a growing understanding of Russia's position from the US side.

The discussions resulted in an agreement to work towards restoring US-Russian bilateral ties and seek a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The delegations also concurred on the need to arrange a summit between the leaders of the two nations.

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the outcomes of the Riyadh talks, stating that resolving the Ukraine conflict would necessitate the normalization of relations between Moscow and Washington. Putin emphasized that Moscow has never closed the door on peace negotiations, pointing out that it was the EU and Kiev that terminated contact with Russia.

Putin further clarified that no one was excluding Kiev from the dialogue, with both Moscow and Washington expecting Ukraine's participation. He highlighted that it was Kiev that imposed a ban on officials from engaging in talks with Moscow, having “withdrawn from the Istanbul negotiations and publicly announced it.”
