US President-elect Donald Trump unveiled an extensive agenda aimed at addressing what he referred to as “transgender lunacy” during his address at the AmericaFest conference in Phoenix, Arizona.
Speaking before a gathering of young conservative supporters on Sunday, Trump committed to implementing several policy changes on his first day in office.
“I will sign executive orders to end child sexual mutilation, remove transgender individuals from the military, and prevent them from entering our elementary, middle, and high schools,” Trump proclaimed, indicating a shift back to policies overturned under the Biden administration. He further promised to impose a ban on transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
“It will be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male and female,” he asserted.
With Republicans set to assume control of both congressional chambers along with the White House, the party aims to advance a conservative agenda regarding LGBTQ issues. Recently, Congress passed a defense budget that includes a provision banning federal funding for specific gender-affirming medical treatments for children of US service members.
The proposed executive order to exclude transgender individuals from the military would impact both future enlistees and current personnel, as reported by the Times in November. This anticipated legislation represents a more stringent version of the ban that Trump established during his first term.
In 2018, Trump prohibited openly transgender individuals from entering the military, while permitting those already in service to remain. At that time, he asserted that he had consulted military experts, leading him to conclude that transgender individuals should not serve in any capacity, citing “tremendous medical costs” linked to necessary hormone treatments and specialized care.
The ban was overturned by outgoing President Joe Biden in 2021.
