Trump secures victories across key battleground states, culminating with win in Arizona
The state, known for its political significance, has 11 electoral votes at stake.
Arizona, which has 11 Electoral College votes, had shifted towards the Democratic Party in recent years, with many statewide positions occupied by Democrats. However, the former president managed to reclaim it for the Republicans.
During his campaign, Trump focused primarily on issues such as border security, immigration, and crime related to illegal immigrants—topics that resonated strongly in a state experiencing a significant increase in migrant numbers last year. He promised mass deportations, advocated for the hiring of an additional 10,000 border agents to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, and committed to reallocating some of the military budget for border security.
The state has the fourth largest population of Hispanic voters, a demographic with which Trump made notable gains in 2024, according to polls.
Trump's victory in Arizona also signifies a shift within the GOP, moving from a party associated with traditional Republican figures like the late Sen. John McCain to one that embodies Trump's MAGA movement. In 2020, President Joe Biden became the first Democrat to secure the state since Bill Clinton in 1996, but Trump has now turned it back in his favor.
With this win, Arizona is the sixth state that Trump has flipped from Biden's 2020 Electoral College triumph. The other states won by Trump that were previously won by Biden include Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Additionally, Trump also claimed victory in North Carolina, a state he narrowly won in 2020, but where Vice President Kamala Harris actively campaigned this time around.
