Trump proposes "Mexico and Canada become US states"
The possibility of Mexico and Canada becoming US states should be considered if they wish to keep receiving American subsidies, according to the president-elect.

US President-elect Donald Trump has proposed that Mexico and Canada might need to become states of the US if they want to continue receiving significant financial assistance from Washington.

In his first Sunday talk show appearance since his November election victory, Trump made these comments during an interview with NBC News.

As recently as last month, Trump promised to impose a 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada unless these countries take action to stop the influx of migrants and drugs into the US. He defended his position on tariffs during the NBC News 'Meet the Press' segment, revealing that the US provides nearly $300 billion in subsidies to Mexico each year, and Canada receives about $100 billion annually.

“We’re subsidizing Canada to the tune over $100 billion a year. We’re subsidizing Mexico for almost $300 billion. We shouldn’t be – why are we subsidizing these countries? If we’re going to subsidize them, let them become a state,” Trump stated.

Earlier this month, Trump made a comparable comment during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Reports indicate that Trudeau expressed concerns about the Canadian economy’s ability to withstand the harsh tariffs proposed by Trump.

Trump's reportedly tongue-in-cheek suggestion was that Canada could avoid the tariffs by becoming the 51st state, with Trudeau serving as governor. He further elaborated that Canada could even be split into two states, one for conservatives and another for liberals.

When questioned by NBC News about whether tariffs were merely a negotiating strategy, Trump shared his discussions with the Canadian and Mexican leaders at Mar-a-Lago. He reinforced his intention to impose substantial duties to compel action against illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the US.

In the same breath, the president-elect emphasized the advantages and strategic significance of such tariffs, asserting they could effectively generate revenue for the economy. However, he cautioned that tariffs should not be applied indiscriminately.
