Trump pledges to halt assistance to South Africa
"South Africa is confiscating land and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY," Trump wrote.
"South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY," Trump stated on TruthSocial, further declaring: "A massive Human Rights VIOLATION, at a minimum, is happening for all to see."
The president's comments appear to reference a recent expropriation measure signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa, aimed at land reform "in the public interest." This initiative seeks to address the economic and racial inequalities stemming from the apartheid era. The ruling African National Congress (ANC) expressed that "This momentous achievement reinforces the ANC’s dedication to addressing the persistent legacy of colonial dispossession and apartheid spatial planning, ensuring that the land and resources of South Africa are used to benefit the majority of its people," following the law's enactment.
However, critics have condemned the law as unjust, particularly because it allows for land seizure without compensation under certain conditions.
Trump emphasized, "The United States won’t stand for it, we will act. Also, I will be cutting off all future funding to South Africa until a full investigation of this situation has been completed!"
Elon Musk, a close ally of Trump and a prominent figure in his administration, has personal ties to South Africa, having been born there in 1971 during the apartheid era. He became a U.S. citizen in 2002.
Recently, Ramaphosa addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he expressed optimism about his relationship with Trump. "I spoke to him soon after he was elected, congratulated him, and we both said we are looking forward to continued dealings and engagements," he noted, according to Reuters.
