Trump Hints at Possible Discussions with Putin
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Tuesday about the possibility of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, indicating that he is likely to engage in phone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week. He hopes that Moscow will agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire.

Trump’s comments came shortly after Ukrainian and American delegations convened in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. During this meeting, Ukraine agreed to Washington's ceasefire proposal with Russia. The president noted that securing such an agreement would significantly contribute to reaching a comprehensive settlement to conclude the conflict.

“So, hopefully, [Putin will] also agree. And I really think that would be 75 percent of the way. The rest is getting it documented. You know, negotiating land positions, etc,” Trump stated.

He added that if Russia does not agree to the ceasefire, “we just keep going on,” cautioning that “lots of people” would be killed. According to him, Russian and US officials are expected to meet “today and tomorrow” to discuss negotiations.

In response to Trump’s statements, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova mentioned that contacts between Moscow and Washington in the upcoming days could be possible. Dmitry Smirnov, a reporter with the Kremlin pool, stated that a phone call between the US and Russian presidents is scheduled for Friday.

So far, Moscow has not given any official response to the comments made following the US-Ukraine discussions in Jeddah. Previously, senior Russian officials have suggested that a temporary truce would not resolve the Ukrainian conflict and emphasized the need to address the underlying issues.

Moscow has also implied that a pause in hostilities would merely allow Kiev and its allies to rearm and prepare for renewed fighting.
