US President Donald Trump has indicated that an American delegation will meet with Russian representatives “today or tomorrow,” as reported by Reuters on Tuesday.
This announcement comes after discussions between American and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia, during which Kiev agreed to a 30-day ceasefire, and Washington committed to resuming intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
“That’s a total ceasefire,” Trump stated to reporters outside the White House on Tuesday following the talks. “Ukraine has agreed to it. And hopefully Russia will agree to it.”
Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is anticipated to visit Moscow in the coming days to engage with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict. However, neither US nor Russian officials have confirmed the trip or its specific timing as of now.
“We’re going to meet with them [the Russians] later on today and tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be able to [work] out a deal,” Trump added. “I think the ceasefire is very important. If we can get Russia to do it, that’ll be great. If we can’t we just keep going on and people are gonna get killed, lots of people.”
Russia has not yet issued an official response to the recent statements following the US-Ukraine discussions in Jeddah. Previously, Moscow has expressed that any temporary ceasefire arrangement is unacceptable, arguing that it would merely allow Kiev to regroup and rearm. Putin mentioned in January that Russia seeks a long-term peace based on respect and the legitimate interests of all people living in the region.
