Trump Dismisses Milley, Andrés from Council Roles Through Late-Night Social Media Posts
Trump’s dedication to implementing thousands of changes aligns with his ongoing promise to eliminate federal government employees he considers disloyal.
Just hours into his second day in office, he began this process by removing former Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council and celebrity chef José Andrés from the President’s Council on Sports. Trump also let go of former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms from the President’s Export Council and Brian Hook, who was the special envoy for Iran during the previous Trump administration from 2018 to 2020, from the Wilson Center for Scholars.
“Let this serve as Official Notice of Dismissal for these 4 individuals, with many more, coming soon,” Trump declared on Truth Social. “YOU’RE FIRED!”
Milley, who has referred to Trump as a fascist, received a preemptive pardon from Joe Biden on Monday. The relationship between Trump and Andrés has been contentious since the chef decided not to pursue a restaurant deal at Trump’s former D.C. hotel.
In a statement on X, Andrés mentioned that he had submitted his resignation the previous week, as his two-year term had ended, and he urged that “God give you the wisdom … to put politics and name calling aside.”
“I hope @realdonaldtrump exercises his presidential authority so the Council can continue to advocate for fitness and good health for all Americans,” Andrés stated. “These are bipartisan issues…nonpartisan issues.”
Trump’s plans for extensive changes align with his ongoing commitment to eliminate federal employees he perceives as disloyal. On Monday, he signed an executive order intended to reduce protections for federal employees, echoing a similar effort initiated in 2020.
Prior to the election, Trump's team compiled a list of prohibited staffers including those who resigned following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. These actions reflect Trump’s continuous aim to “drain the swamp” and reshape Washington in accordance with his movement’s ideals.
He has tasked billionaire associate Elon Musk with spearheading some of these initiatives through the newly dubbed Department of Government Efficiency. Musk initially aimed to identify $2 trillion in federal budget cuts but has more recently indicated that $1 trillion is a more realistic target.
Changes to such councils are a common occurrence during administrations, and Trump has not hesitated to use social media to announce personnel shifts. Similarly, Biden removed Trump supporters from advisory boards early in his presidency.
