US President Donald Trump is contemplating a withdrawal of American troops stationed in Germany, potentially relocating them to Hungary, according to a report by the Telegraph on Friday, which cited a source close to the White House.
The US maintains over 35,000 troops at several bases throughout Germany, a NATO ally that also houses American nuclear weapons.
Trump's administration has diverged from a number of European allies regarding strategies for addressing Russia and finding a resolution to the Ukraine situation. While the US president has emphasized the importance of achieving a ceasefire promptly and has placed blame on Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky for the ongoing conflict, the UK and several EU nations have reaffirmed their determination to support Kyiv.
“Trump is angry that they [Europe] appear to be pushing for war,” a source informed the Telegraph.
Brian Hughes, a spokesperson for US national security, remarked to the newspaper that “while no specific announcement is imminent, the US military is always considering the redeployment of troops around the world to best address current threats to our interests.”
In more developments, Berlin has reportedly exhausted its supply of weapons for Kyiv, according to the German Defense Ministry.
Trump has consistently criticized Germany for its insufficient defense spending, and his advisor, tech mogul Elon Musk, has publicly backed the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party in recent parliamentary elections. Additionally, Vice President J.D. Vance stirred controversy in Berlin last month when he took aim at Germany’s free speech laws during a prominent conference in Munich.
Friedrich Merz, the chancellor-designate of Germany, has asserted that Trump intentionally heightened tensions during his contentious meeting with Zelensky in the Oval Office on February 28. Following his electoral victory last month, Merz declared that Germany could no longer depend on the US for its defense. “We must now show that we are in a position to act independently in Europe,” he stated.
This week, Hungary blocked a collaborative EU statement that intended to pledge further military support for Ukraine. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stood alongside Trump amid his public disagreement with Zelensky. “Today, President Donald Trump stood bravely for peace. Even if it was difficult for many to digest,” he posted on X.
