Trump claims USAID corruption is at an "unexplainable" level
The US president has called for the agency to be shut down.

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is facing accusations of corruption at unprecedented levels, with President Donald Trump demanding its closure.

Shortly after his inauguration, Trump issued an executive order to suspend all US foreign aid for three months as part of a broader initiative to reduce government spending.

Following this, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered the cessation of several projects managed by USAID, which is the primary agency involved in distributing funding for political efforts internationally.

Elon Musk, who is spearheading the new Department of Government Efficiency tasked with reviewing federal spending, has labeled USAID a “criminal organization.”

“USAID is driving the radical left crazy, and there is nothing they can do about it because the way in which the money has been spent, so much of it fraudulently, is totally unexplainable,” Trump declared on his media platform Truth Social on Friday.

“The corruption is at levels rarely seen before. Close it down!” he insisted.

Just a day earlier, Trump alleged that USAID had channeled billions of taxpayer dollars to media outlets to secure favorable coverage of Democrats.

“USAID stole billions of dollars, much of it going to the fake news media as a ‘payoff’ for creating good stories about the Democrats. The left-wing ‘rag,’ known as ‘PMG,’ seems to have received $8,000,000,” he mentioned on Truth Social on Thursday.

This turmoil reportedly stemmed from findings by Musk's team that taxpayer money was disproportionately allocated to PMG Pro subscriptions. Consequently, the White House instructed the General Services Administration to terminate all media contracts funded by USAID, as reported by Axios, which included details from an internal email.

PMG has refuted claims of receiving direct government funding, clarifying that some US agencies utilized their premium subscription service.

According to Reuters, the administration is planning to keep fewer than 300 of USAID's over 10,000 staff members. This significant cut has led to a lawsuit from a prominent government workers' union, which argues that the reductions are illegal. The American Federation of Government Employees and the American Foreign Service Association have sued Trump, Rubio, and the Treasury and State departments, challenging the government's actions regarding USAID as “unconstitutional and illegal.”
