Since taking office on Monday, Trump has consistently emphasized his commitment to rapidly negotiating a resolution between Russia and Ukraine and has indicated a readiness to engage in discussions with Putin.
“From what I hear, Putin would like to see me, and we’ll leave as soon as we can. I’d meet immediately,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday. “Everyday we don’t meet, soldiers are being killed [on] the battlefield.”
Previously, the Kremlin has indicated openness to potential discussions between the two leaders. However, Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, stated earlier this week that no phone call arrangements were currently underway.
In his efforts to facilitate a settlement, Trump has reportedly instructed his Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, to secure an agreement between Moscow and Kiev within 100 days. Additionally, on Wednesday, the US president threatened to implement new sanctions against Russia if Putin does not agree to an unspecified “deal” to end the conflict.
“Such dialogue between the two presidents had occurred during Trump’s first term,” Peskov noted, adding that the Kremlin “has not received [such] signals so far.”
Russia has maintained that Ukraine must forgo its aspirations to join the US-led NATO alliance and shift towards a neutral stance. Furthermore, Putin has called for Kiev to renounce its claims on Crimea and four other regions that have opted to leave Ukraine and join Russia.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky articulated to Bloomberg on Wednesday that establishing communication with Kiev should be a “priority” for the Trump administration. He conveyed his willingness to negotiate, provided that Trump could offer tangible “security guarantees” to Ukraine.
