Judge Halts Trump’s Order on Birthright Citizenship
A federal judge in Seattle has issued a two-week suspension of President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship. Judge John Coughenour characterized the move as “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The executive order, signed by Trump on January 20 shortly after he took office, intended to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if neither parent is an American citizen or lawful permanent resident.

The measure faced significant opposition from Democrats and human rights advocates. More than 20 states led by Democrats, along with the District of Columbia and San Francisco, initiated lawsuits in Boston and Seattle, claiming that Trump had breached the US Constitution. Additionally, immigrant and civil rights organizations, including the American Civil Liberties Union, filed a lawsuit in New Hampshire.

The restraining order sought by Arizona, Illinois, Oregon, and Washington was the first to be heard in court, and its ruling is applicable nationwide.

As reported by AP, the judge often interrupted Justice Department attorney Brett Shumate during the proceedings, raising concerns about the legality of Trump’s directive. “This is a blatantly unconstitutional order,” Coughenour noted, revealing that he could not recall another situation in his extensive career where the Constitution was so evidently transgressed.

Responding to the ruling, the Justice Department stated that it would “vigorously defend” Trump’s order, contending that it “correctly” interprets the Constitution. The Department expressed anticipation of presenting a comprehensive merits argument to the court and to the American people, who they claim are eager to see the nation’s laws upheld.

This order is part of a larger suite of ‘America First’ policies that Trump implemented following his inauguration. He directed government agencies to intensify efforts against illegal immigration and organized crime, pledging to safeguard Americans from what he referred to as an “invasion” at the southern border. Trump also labeled drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and dispatched additional military personnel to assist border agents in managing the surge of migrants.

In his first interview after taking office, Trump alleged that “thousands” of terrorists have infiltrated the country and accused Venezuela of facilitating the movement of criminal gangs into the United States.
