Think tank reports China continues as leading producer of scientific 'hot papers'
According to a report released on Friday by a think tank, China continues to be the leading contributor of scientific "hot papers," accounting for 48.4 percent of the worldwide total.
Hot papers are defined as scientific studies that have been published within two years of classification, received a significant number of citations in the last two months, and are among the top 0.1 percent in their respective fields for citations.
As of July 2024, China had produced 2,071 hot papers, while the United States followed with 1,625, according to the report from the Ministry of Science and Technology's Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China.
In terms of highly cited papers, which are those that rank in the top 1 percent of their fields for citations over the past decade, China secured the second position. The report noted that China had 65,700 highly cited papers as of July, making up 33.8 percent of the global total. The United States led this category with 76,500 highly cited papers, or 39.3 percent of the global total.
Additionally, the report pointed out that China published 395 papers in the three most prestigious scientific journals—Cell, Nature, and Science—in 2023, advancing its global ranking from fourth place in 2022 to second place last year.
China has consistently ranked first in the number of scientific research papers published for many years and aims to continue addressing the need for high-quality papers, as indicated by the report.
