Several pro-Palestinian activists disrupted a Thanksgiving Day parade in Manhattan by briefly blocking the path of a large Ronald McDonald balloon. The demonstrators, who donned face masks and disposable raincoats, chanted “Free Palestine,” waved Palestinian flags, and displayed a large banner with messages such as “Do not celebrate genocide,” “Land back,” and “Arms embargo now!”
The parade experienced a pause of at least five minutes as police intervened to remove the protesters from the scene. The New York Police Department confirmed that “the demonstrators were taken into custody without incident.”
However, the New York Post reported that its journalists witnessed at least one protester struggling with officers, and indicated that some demonstrators were treated roughly by the police, being pushed onto the asphalt before being handcuffed. An officer commented on the situation to the New York Post, stating, “This is disgusting. There are times and places to peacefully protest, but not the Thanksgiving Day parade. This is a day for families to enjoy and not be interrupted by these a**holes.”
This follows a similar incident in 2023, where pro-Palestinian demonstrators also disrupted the Thanksgiving Day Parade, leading to approximately 40 arrests.
The activists are protesting against the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, initiated after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages taken.
Since those events, the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza reports that at least 44,330 Palestinians have died and over 104,933 have been injured in the subsequent Israeli ground and air offensive.
