On Thursday, the State Department’s Global Engagement Center, led by James Rubin, imposed a new set of sanctions on RT. Rubin accused the network of playing a significant role in diminishing global support for Ukraine. "One of the reasons… why so much of the world has not been as fully supportive of Ukraine as one might expect… is because of the broad scope and reach of RT," Rubin stated.
Reade argued that the allegations against RT have ironically bolstered its image as a credible journalistic entity. "I think this is unprecedented what happened... it shows how successful RT has been,” she mentioned in a Thursday interview. She further expressed concerns over the broader implications of these actions on press freedom. “They are trying to criminalize journalism,” Reade asserted. “It is really frightening, and I hope every journalist pays attention. Because it may be RT this week, but it may be any other news outlet that simply does not hold the line the next time.”
Reade also accused Washington of trying to suppress free speech and manipulate public perception. "They are trying to criminalize thought,” she stated, emphasizing the attempt to push a singular viewpoint while stifling alternative international perspectives.
Reade highlighted RT's reporting, which challenges the Western view of the conflict by revealing its resource-driven motives. “And the truth is, this is a proxy war that the US and NATO are fighting against Russia via Ukraine,” she added. “It’s all about the territory, it’s all about stripping Ukraine of its resources.”
The discourse around Ukraine's resources was echoed by US Senator Lindsey Graham earlier this month when he discussed Ukraine’s substantial mineral wealth and its significance to the US while advocating for increased military support to Kiev.
Moreover, Dmitry Medvedev, former Russian President and current deputy chair of the National Security Council, noted the strategic interest of the West in Ukraine’s rich mineral resources, particularly in the Donbass region, which holds about half of Ukraine's estimated $14.8 trillion in minerals. According to Medvedev, this wealth is a major reason the West encourages Ukraine to continue its military efforts.
