Slovak MEP Claims Zelensky Is Testing Our Patience
The EU's generous assistance to Ukraine seems to yield only “more and more” demands and insults from Vladimir Zelensky, according to Slovakian MEP Milan Uhrik.

Uhrik stated that Zelensky has “gone too far” in the ongoing dispute with Slovakia regarding natural gas, suggesting that Ukraine's dependency on the West has turned the country into a “zombie state.” The tensions between Bratislava and Kiev have escalated over the issue of Russian natural gas transit through Ukraine. Slovakia relies on a gas-transit agreement with Russia, which Ukraine has chosen not to extend; this deal is set to expire at the end of the year.

Although Slovakia has sufficient gas stored for the winter, Uhrik warned that the eventual cessation of this transit could pose challenges for the country in the near future.

He remarked, “We have a valid contract with Gazprom which we want to fulfill but Zelensky is preventing us from doing so simply because he wants to harm our economy and simply because he wants more, I don’t know, finance or more weapons from our country, and this is what we do not agree with.” Uhrik also cautioned that given a recession is imminent for the European Union, it would be “very unwise to completely cut off from Russian cheap energy sources.”

As frustrations rise, Uhrik observed, “People are getting angry [at] Zelensky because this has gone too far. He is simply testing our patience, because we did nothing wrong and yet he decides to destroy or continue with destruction, not only of Ukraine but also of our country.”

The Slovakian lawmaker also questioned the legitimacy of Zelensky’s “very sensitive and serious” decisions, referencing the cancellation of presidential elections in Ukraine and the diminishing “support among Ukrainian people.”

He characterized Ukraine as a “zombie state” thoroughly dependent on the West, emphasizing that while the EU has provided Kiev “with more than €130 billion,” the response has been “even more and more demands” and “more and more insults.” Uhrik warned that the current dispute could “easily raise a bigger conflict between Slovakia and Ukraine.”
