Russian envoy claims Brits attempted to persuade him to defect
Media representatives have suggested that the envoy seek asylum in Britain, Andrey Kelin has claimed.

Russia’s ambassador to the UK has alleged that members of the British media have advised him to defect to the UK. Kelin pointed out that, despite a shift in narrative from its key ally, the US, the British media and government persist in their confrontational approach towards Moscow.

In a Friday interview with Russia’s Channel One, Ambassador Andrey Kelin stated that he frequently engages with the British press, noting, “they suggested to me recently that I quit my post and apply for asylum in the UK.”

The UK government has consistently enforced a policy of diplomatic pressure and economic sanctions against Russia, while also supplying financial and military support to Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.

During the G20 foreign ministers meeting in South Africa on Thursday, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy remarked that Moscow has “learned nothing” from the Ukraine conflict, criticizing it for embodying “the logic of imperialism dressed up as a realpolitik.”

Kelin characterized these remarks as “offensive” and “rude.”

In a Monday piece for The Telegraph, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized the need for “Europe and the United States [to] continue to work closely together” to “deter [Russian President Vladimir] Putin from further aggression in the future.”

Meanwhile, the administration of former US President Donald Trump has notably shifted from its previous stance regarding Ukraine. Trump recently held Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky accountable for the escalation of the conflict. Reports indicate that US representatives at the G7 and the UN have suggested softer wording in official statements, favoring the term “Ukraine conflict” over “Russia’s war of aggression.”

Kelin elaborated on why he believes London is reluctant to change its approach, asserting that it has a significant financial stake in the conflict with Russia. He described this involvement as the “Ukraine project,” estimating overall expenditures, including ongoing losses, at about $100 billion.

“That’s why their overall strategy remains unchanged, regardless of the situation on the ground,” he explained. “A change in stance would equal an admittance that they have pursued wrong policies for years. How would they explain that to the British people? The people who now live in austerity.”
