During a press conference in Astana, Kazakhstan, after a two-day summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Putin remarked that the election campaign was marked by “absolutely uncivilized methods” used against Trump, including what he referred to as “repeated assassination attempts.”
“In my opinion, he is not safe now,” Putin noted, reminding the audience of “various incidents that have happened in US history.” He commended Trump as an experienced and intelligent politician, expressing hope that the president-elect is “cautious and understands this.”
Trump faced an assassination attempt on July 13 while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania, when a bullet, fired from approximately 150 meters away, grazed his ear. The Secret Service quickly apprehended the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Crooks from a nearby Pittsburgh suburb. In another incident, Ryan Routh was arrested in September after planning an ambush at one of Trump's golf courses in Florida.
Additionally, ABC News reported on Wednesday that an Arizona man was arrested for threatening to kill Trump and his family through a series of Facebook videos he posted almost daily.
Putin expressed dismay that Trump’s family and children became targets for the Republican's political adversaries, labeling such conduct as “revolting” and reflective of a decline in the US political system, suggesting that even criminal groups wouldn’t resort to such tactics.
He speculated that the Biden administration might have been attempting to complicate Trump’s relationship with Russia. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Moscow remains “ready for dialogue with the United States, including with the future administration.”
