Police Capture Alleged Shooter of US Healthcare CEO
The suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been identified as a "hot Italian tech bro gym rat," according to one description.

The 26-year-old Ivy League graduate was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, roughly 440 kilometers from New York City, as confirmed by the NYPD.

Thompson was fatally shot on Wednesday morning in Manhattan by an assailant who was reportedly masked and hooded, waiting for him to arrive. After the attack, the suspect fled to Central Park, where he left behind a backpack before vanishing.

On Monday morning, law enforcement found and arrested Luigi Nicholas Mangione at the McDonald’s. An employee recognized him from the wanted poster due to the distinctiveness of his eyebrows.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, "Mangione was found with a gun and a silencer ‘consistent with those used in the murder.'"

“He was sitting there eating,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny reported to the press.

When detectives checked his ID, they discovered it was a fake, bearing the name “Mark Rosario”—the same name Mangione used when renting a room in New York. Authorities also found a handwritten manifesto which contained the words, “These parasites had it coming,” alongside additional fake IDs and a face mask.

Tisch stated, “At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson.” Mangione is currently being held on gun charges.

Sources reported to the New York Post that Mangione’s motive for shooting Thompson was related to the healthcare industry's treatment of a sick relative. One of Mangione’s social media photos displayed an X-ray of a serious spinal injury.

His active social media accounts as of Monday evening indicated he was originally from Towson, Maryland. He was valedictorian at the Gilman School in Baltimore in 2016 before attending the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in 2020 with both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in computer science. His most recent known residence was in Hawaii after working for a California-based car company.

Mangione's X account primarily featured posts about climate activism, lab-grown food, and fitness topics. He had reposted content from neuroscientist Andrew Huberman and World Economic Forum figure Yuval Noah Harari, lauded Tim Urban's book as “the most important philosophical text of the early 21st century,” and suggested that solutions to declining birthrates should promote “natural human interaction, sex, physical fitness and spirituality.”

The book review site Goodreads noted that Mangione had read 295 titles, including a review of ‘Industrial Society and Its Future’ by Ted Kaczynski, known as the infamous ‘Unabomber.’
