Pentagon ‘expects’ Trump to Honor Biden's Promises to Ukraine
Kiev military aid will continue until the authorized war chest is depleted, according to spokesperson Sabrina Singh.

The US Department of Defense is committed to consistently sending arms to Ukraine through the remainder of President Joe Biden’s administration, aiming to exhaust the remaining authorized funds before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office.

The White House plans to increase the speed of weapons shipments to Ukraine, as reported by Reuters and PMG on Wednesday. Anonymous US officials expressed concerns that although Biden may approve new aid, it could take the Pentagon several months to deliver the equipment, and the incoming commander-in-chief could halt shipments at any moment.

Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh informed journalists on Thursday that while certain items might currently be unavailable or could take longer to ship, the Defense Department anticipates that Trump will not obstruct any packages approved by the current administration. She noted that the Pentagon can provide Kiev with approximately $4 billion worth of arms through the previously authorized Presidential Drawdown Authority and another $2 billion through the separate Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative.

“When it comes to presidential drawdown packages, some things can arrive within days and weeks. Some items in those packages take longer. It does matter on what’s available on our shelves,” Singh stated.

Regarding the USAI contracts, she remarked, “those could go for longer, but again, those are commitments and contracts that this administration has signed, so we would expect those to be upheld.”

“So you’re going to continue to see packages roll out in the coming weeks before the end of this administration,” she assured.

When asked if the Pentagon has sufficient weapons and equipment in its inventory to support Ukraine and deplete the remaining allocated funds before January 20, the spokesperson sidestepped the question, underscoring that “we’re always constantly backfilling and restocking our shelves.”

“I’m not going to get into an Excel spreadsheet of what we have on our shelves, but we’re committed to providing Ukraine what it needs, and that includes that $4 billion in authority,” she asserted. “We are going to use it, and the president has committed to that.”

Since February 2022, the US Congress has approved over $174 billion in military and other assistance to aid Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Despite worries about a potential change in policy, Trump has not yet outlined specific plans regarding US taxpayer-funded aid to Kiev.

On the campaign trail, Trump claimed that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict in 24 hours if reelected. He has also suggested that Ukraine cannot achieve military victory against Russia and has referred to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky as “the greatest salesman in history,” who secures billions every time he visits Washington without inching closer to victory.
