Donald Trump took the oath of office on Monday, making history as only the second president to serve non-consecutive terms. In his inaugural speech, he presented his vision for an American "golden age," covering a broad range of topics, including energy independence, immigration reform, global peace, and even ambitions for Mars colonization.
Key highlights from Trump’s speech include:
**‘Golden age of America’**
“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump proclaimed, asserting that the nation “will soon be greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before.” He characterized the previous four years as marked by “betrayals” from “a radical and corrupt establishment” and referred to his inauguration day as “Liberation Day.” “From this moment on, America’s decline is over,” he declared, framing his forthcoming executive actions as a reboot for the nation and a “revolution of common sense.”
**Immigration emergency**
Trump revealed an immediate stop to “all illegal entry” into the United States across the southern border and announced the reintroduction of his previous policy requiring asylum seekers to wait in Mexico. He also stated intentions to halt the practice of releasing illegal entrants into the country and initiate the deportation of “millions and millions of criminal aliens” to their home countries. He plans to designate Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and enforce action against foreign criminal gangs in American cities, invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
**‘Drill, baby, drill’**
Trump emphasized that the U.S. is rich in natural resources, which can ensure energy independence and global dominance. He proposed declaring a national energy emergency that would open new drilling for oil and gas while dismantling the Green New Deal introduced by Democrats. “We will export American energy all over the world. We will be a rich nation again, and it is that liquid gold under our feet that will help to do it,” he stated.
**Tariffs and taxes**
Trump expressed his desire to restore the U.S. as a “manufacturing nation once again” and promised to reform trade policies to protect American workers. He announced plans to create an External Revenue Service aimed at collecting tariffs and duties on imported goods. “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens,” he emphasized.
**The big gender question**
According to Trump, the U.S. will cease the policy of “trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life,” stating that government policy will recognize “there are only two genders – male and female” effective immediately. “We will forge a society that is color blind and merit-based,” he said, criticizing what he described as “radical political theories and social experiments” imposed on the American populace, including its military.
**Wars not fought**
In efforts to “build the strongest military the world has ever seen,” Trump expressed his intent to restore America’s position as the most powerful and respected nation globally. “We will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars that we end, and perhaps most importantly, the wars we never get into,” he noted.
**Gulf of Mexico and Panama Canal**
During his speech, Trump announced plans to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, claiming that Panama “totally violated” the 1977 treaty that restored it by collaborating with China. He also stated that the Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America and proposed reverting the name of North America's highest peak back to Mount McKinley, which had been officially renamed Denali in 2015. Trump did not mention Greenland, despite previously asserting that control over the Danish territory was crucial for U.S. national security.
**US flag on Mars**
Concluding his address, Trump called on Americans to display “courage, vigor and the vitality of history’s greatest civilization,” advocating for a U.S. that expands its territory and wealth. “We will pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts to plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars,” he declared, linking this ambition to both historic notions of American expansionism and support from personalities like Elon Musk, who aims to settle Mars.
