Netanyahu dismisses Israeli defense minister
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over “significant gaps” in their shared views regarding the ongoing war against Hamas and Hezbollah.

In the wake of Gallant's departure, Foreign Minister Israel Katz has been proposed as a replacement for the defense role, with Gideon Saar identified as a potential successor if Katz takes over, according to reports from Israeli media.

“Serious differences arose between Gallant and me regarding the campaign’s management, with these disagreements accompanied by statements and actions that contradicted both government and cabinet decisions,” Netanyahu explained in a statement released on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister emphasized that wartime demands “complete trust” between the head of government and the defense minister, asserting that this trust “has eroded” over recent months.

“I made repeated efforts to bridge these gaps, but they only widened. These issues even reached the public in an unacceptable manner, and, worse, became known to our enemies, who took pleasure and found advantage in it,” Netanyahu continued.

He described Gallant’s forthcoming replacement as a “bulldozer with quiet strength and responsible determination,” highlighting Katz's previous leadership in both the finance and intelligence ministries before his current foreign affairs position.

This marks the second occasion on which Netanyahu has terminated Gallant’s role. The first instance occurred in March 2023, when Gallant openly criticized the government’s judicial reforms, which he indicated were fracturing Israeli society and posed a threat to the military. Following widespread public protests, Netanyahu reversed that decision in early April.
