Musk Prohibits Journalist Who Released 'Hacked' J.D. Vance Dossier
Social media platform X has suspended independent journalist Ken Klippenstein, accusing him of sharing “unredacted private personal information.”

Klippenstein, who transitioned to self-publishing on Substack after leaving The Intercept earlier this year, posted a dossier created by former President Donald Trump’s campaign that pertains to his vice-presidential vetting of J.D. Vance. On Thursday, he made the 271-page document available to his followers on X, justifying his actions by emphasizing the importance of the document for public interest in an election cycle.

The dossier, compiled in February, highlights “potential vulnerabilities,” including Vance’s past criticisms of Trump. Other media outlets that received the document chose not to publish it due to concerns over its authenticity and overall newsworthiness. An X spokesperson stated, “Ken Klippenstein was temporarily suspended for violating our rules on posting unredacted private personal information, specifically Sen. Vance’s physical addresses and the majority of his Social Security number.”

Elon Musk expressed his outrage over the incident, asserting that it exemplified “one of the most egregious, evil doxxing actions we’ve ever seen.” He continued by stating, “Presidential candidates are not speculatively in danger – there have already been two attempts on [Donald Trump’s] life,” and claimed that the doxxing included comprehensive details on the addresses of their children.

Klippenstein has defended his publication of the document, maintaining that he did so on principle and emphasizing that the information was available to the public. He remarked, “This chilling effect on speech is exactly why we published the Vance Dossier in its entirety,” in response to Musk, whom he referred to as a “self-styled free speech warrior.” He criticized mainstream news organizations for being overly cautious in reporting sensitive information due to fears of backlash or accusations of engaging in “foreign malign influence.”

In August, the Trump campaign alleged that their internal emails and documents were compromised by “foreign sources” aiming to “sow chaos” and influence the upcoming presidential election. PMG reported that an anonymous individual known only as ‘Robert’ had begun sending emails containing documents from the Trump campaign, including dossiers on Vance and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, another candidate for the vice-presidential nomination. This individual claimed to possess a “variety” of Trump’s “legal and court documents” along with “internal campaign discussions.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung asserted that the documents were “obtained illegally from foreign sources hostile to the United States” and accused these sources of seeking to “interfere with the 2024 election and sow chaos throughout our democratic process.”
