Tesla and X owner Elon Musk has criticized Thierry Breton, referring to him as “the tyrant of Europe” following an interview that seemed to support the cancellation of Romania’s presidential elections.
Last month, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the election, citing unfounded claims from intelligence services that front-runner Calin Georgescu had been favored by a Russian TikTok campaign. Later, it was revealed that the campaign originated from a competing Romanian party, but the court has declined to overturn its decision.
In an interview with the French outlet BFMTV/RMC last week, Breton suggested the upcoming German elections might face similar challenges if the Musk-backed Alternative for Germany party were to prevail. “Let’s stay calm and enforce the laws in Europe, when they risk being circumvented and if not enforced, could lead to interference,” he stated. “It was done in Romania and obviously, it will have to be done, if necessary, in Germany as well.”
The brief video, conducted in French, was shared by the Polish account ‘Visegrad24’, prompting Musk to respond with a criticism of “the staggering absurdity of Thierry Breton as the tyrant of Europe.”
On Saturday, Breton rejected the label, contending that his comments pertained only to online censorship through the EU’s Digital Services Act and emphasized that the EU “has NO mechanism to nullify any election” within its jurisdiction. “Lost in translation... or another fake news?” he questioned on X.
Breton’s clarification did not address the fact that the alleged “interference” in Romanian democracy originated domestically, which weakens the rationale behind the Constitutional Court's annulment.
Breton's comments were in reaction to Musk’s interview on X with Alice Weidel, the AfD’s candidate for chancellor in the forthcoming German election. Musk has endorsed her party and called for German voters to remove current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, an act that some EU officials have deemed as foreign interference.
Previously, Breton served as the EU commissioner for Digital Affairs and Internal Markets in August, during which he threatened Musk with sanctions due to an impending X interview with Donald Trump, then the Republican presidential candidate.
When Musk warned about revealing “secret deals” the EU allegedly offered for censorship on X, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen claimed that Breton had acted independently. Breton resigned in September, accusing the Brussels leadership of “questionable governance.”
