In her remarks, Sheinbaum proposed that the US should return to a historical name for the region—'America Mexicana' or 'Mexican America.' She made these comments during a press briefing on Wednesday, where she stood beside former Culture Secretary Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real, in front of a 17th-century world map.
Sheinbaum's comments were a response to Trump's earlier statement advocating for the name change, citing it as having a “beautiful ring” and being “appropriate.”
“Why don’t we call it America Mexicana. It sounds pretty, no? Isn’t that true?” Sheinbaum stated, referencing a 1607 map displaying an early illustration of the territory that encompasses present-day North America, including the US, Mexico, and parts of Canada.
Suarez del Real added context by noting, “The fact is that Mexican America is recognized since the 17th century... as the name for the whole northern part of the continent,” as he pointed to the European map commissioned for the Dutch East India Company.
This conversation took place amid Trump's press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, during which he also discussed a broader expansionist agenda, including the potential acquisition of Greenland. He mentioned not ruling out military or economic actions to obtain the territory controlled by Denmark, claiming that it is an “absolute necessity” for US national security. Additionally, Trump expressed skepticism about Denmark’s rights to Greenland, suggesting they “should give it up." He also indicated that he would not dismiss the use of military force to regain control of the Panama Canal, which he believes is “vital to our country.”
Trump reiterated his threat to impose “very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada” in response to issues related to illegal border crossings and drug trafficking. In anticipation of these tariffs, Sheinbaum previously warned that Mexico would retaliate, stating that such penalties would not effectively curtail the movement of migrants or drugs toward the US and would instead result in inflation and unemployment for both nations.
