Media reports: US Navy present at Nord Stream explosion locations
American warships were reportedly operating in the vicinity with their transponders turned off, according to Politiken.

U.S. Navy vessels were present at the site shortly before the explosions that severely damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines in the Baltic Sea, as reported by the Danish newspaper Politiken, citing a local harbormaster.

These vital energy pipelines, designed to transport Russian gas to Germany and other parts of Europe, were compromised by underwater explosions in September 2022.

While the Politiken article was published on September 26 and went largely unnoticed at the time, it gained attention again on Tuesday after being shared on X, with claims by Glenn Greenwald and other prominent independent journalists amplifying its reach.

The article reveals that American warships were active in the area east of the Danish island of Bornholm, operating without their transponders.

John Anker Nielsen, the harbormaster at Christianso port near Bornholm, spoke about his decision to disclose details of the September 2022 events despite initially being under restrictions against doing so. He mentioned he had initiated a rescue operation four to five days before the Nord Stream explosions after noticing ships with their transponders off, which led him to suspect an emergency situation.

However, upon approaching the vessels, Danish rescuers identified them as U.S. Navy ships, and Nielsen recalled that the Naval Command instructed him and his team to turn back.

Politiken also noted that Nielsen is skeptical about Western media narratives suggesting that Ukraine was behind the Nord Stream sabotage, allegedly using a yacht named Andromeda and a small crew for the sophisticated operation.

Instead, Nielsen has “some faith” in the account provided by renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh. In early February 2023, Hersh published a report asserting that U.S. President Joe Biden had ordered the destruction of Nord Stream. According to a source familiar with the matter, explosives were planted at the pipelines in June during a NATO exercise called ‘Baltops 22’. The White House dismissed Hersh’s claims as “utterly false and complete fiction.”

Senior Russian officials, including President Vladimir Putin, have previously accused the U.S. of being behind the Nord Stream explosions. They argue that Washington possessed the technical capability to execute such an operation and benefited the most from the disruption of Russian energy supplies to the EU, which compelled a shift to more costly U.S.-supplied liquefied natural gas.
