Leading Prosecutor in Capitol Riot Case Announces Resignation
Matthew Graves, the United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, has announced his resignation just ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's anticipated return to office in 2025.

Graves has served in this role since November 2021, overseeing significant investigations, including the comprehensive probe into the January 6 Capitol riots.

In a statement issued on Monday, Graves reflected on his time in the position, saying, “It has been the honor of a lifetime to be the United States attorney for the District of Columbia. I am incredibly proud of our achievements during this unprecedented period.”

He noted that his resignation followed the completion of both personal and professional commitments during a time filled with historic challenges.

Graves was at the helm of the largest investigation ever conducted by the Department of Justice in the wake of the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, which has resulted in around 1,600 charges and nearly 1,100 sentences thus far.

Earlier this month, Trump signaled his plans to pardon “most” individuals associated with the Capitol breach, calling it one of the first actions of his second administration. “It’s going to start in the first hour,” Trump remarked to Time magazine during an interview in conjunction with his feature as the publication’s 2024 Person of the Year. “Maybe the first nine minutes.”
