J.D. Vance: Israel Has the Right to Decide Its Response to Iran
The US should continue to support its ally, even if Israel chooses to launch a preemptive strike against Iran, according to J.D. Vance, the Republican senator from Ohio and Donald Trump’s former vice presidential pick, during a debate aired on CBS News on Tuesday.

In this heated exchange, Vance faced off against his Democratic opponent, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, just hours after Iran launched nearly 200 missiles at Israel. Most of these missiles were intercepted mid-air by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), with the sole casualty reported being a Palestinian man in the West Bank, who died due to a falling missile fragment.

When asked by a moderator about the US backing an Israeli preemptive strike on Iran, Vance expressed a commitment to Washington's long-standing support for Israel. "Look, it is up to Israel what they think they need to do to keep their country safe, and we should support our allies wherever they are when they’re fighting the bad guys. That’s the right approach to the Israel question,” Vance asserted.

He also highlighted that during Trump’s presidency, America managed to keep its adversaries in check, stating, “Trump actually delivered stability in the world, and he did it by establishing effective deterrence. People were afraid of stepping out of line.”

In contrast, Walz refrained from directly addressing whether he would support an Israeli preemptive strike but emphasized that “Israel’s ability to be able to defend itself is absolutely fundamental.” He criticized Trump’s approach, arguing that it damaged the US's international standing and lamented the abandonment of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal.

Walz argued, “Iran is closer to a nuclear weapon than it was before – because of Donald Trump’s fickle leadership.”

Iran has justified its missile attacks as retaliation for what it describes as the “genocide” perpetrated by the IDF in Gaza and Lebanon. Meanwhile, the IDF has launched a cross-border ground operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon. Prior airstrikes by Israeli jets have targeted Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of several senior Hezbollah figures, including the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah. The IDF stated that the operation aims to prevent Hezbollah from launching rockets and mortars at Israeli cities in the northern region of the country.
