China reveals the top 10 global scientific and technological accomplishments in 2024

China has announced its list of the top ten scientific and technological achievements for 2024. This yearly recognition highlights remarkable advancements and innovations made in various fields. The selected achievements showcase the nation’s commitment to scientific progress and its growing influence in the global tech landscape. Through these accomplishments, China emphasizes its role as a leader in research and development, setting a standard for excellence in the international community.

On Wednesday, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering unveiled the top 10 sci-tech achievements for 2024. Among the notable highlights are the 3D printing of functional human brain tissue, a bilingual brain-reading device, and stem cell therapy designed to restore human vision.

At a press conference held in Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, CAE Vice President Wang Chen presented the world's top achievements. These selections were made by academicians from CAS and CAE, who possess the country’s highest national academic credentials in the fields of science and engineering.

The achievements recognized this year include the 3D printing of functional human brain tissue; Willow, Google's new quantum chip which has reached an accuracy milestone; and the Euclid Space Telescope, celebrated for capturing the initial image of the "cosmic atlas."

The list also features the largest brain gene regulatory network atlas alongside an ultra-precise 3D atlas of cancer cells. Additionally, it includes the first bilingual brain-reading device that allows individuals with aphasia to "speak" again, as well as the fifth test flight of SpaceX's Starship, which successfully recovered its first-stage rocket.

The compilation further highlights the world's first stem cell therapy for restoring human vision, the inaugural live human transplant of a pig kidney, and the successful trial of a long-acting preventive injection for HIV.

This year's announcement marks the 31st iteration of this annual event, which aims to enhance public awareness of advancements in science and technology.

The top 10 sci-tech achievements in China for 2024 were also revealed during the same press conference.
