Israel Alleges Discovery of Hezbollah Gold
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), a bunker thought to contain hundreds of millions of dollars in Hezbollah's gold and cash is allegedly located beneath a major hospital in Beirut. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari made this assertion amid a series of airstrikes launched by Israel on the Lebanese capital, targeting the Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association, which Israel claims is operated by the Hezbollah movement.

“The Israeli Air Force carried out a series of precise strikes on these Hezbollah financial strongholds,” Hagari stated on Monday, explaining that the purpose of these attacks is to reduce the group's capacity to finance operations against Israelis. He reported that the IDF has previously struck a subterranean vault beneath a residential building that held millions in cash and gold. However, he mentioned that another significant target, which is said to be a bunker linked to late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah—killed by the IDF in late September—has not yet been attacked.

The alleged vault is described as being “directly under El Sahel Hospital in the heart of Beirut in Dakhia,” according to Hagari, who added that there are “hundreds of millions of dollars in cash and gold inside the bunker right now.”

In response to the Israeli bombardments targeting Beirut and southern Lebanon, which aimed at facilities connected to the Al-Qard Al-Hassan financial association, the UN’s regional human rights office condemned the actions, noting that the attacks resulted in “extensive destruction to residential properties and civilian infrastructure,” as well as causing “indescribable panic and another wave of displacement among residents of those areas.” The UN Human Rights Office in the Middle East and North Africa emphasized that under international humanitarian law, “objects that contribute economically or financially to the war effort of a party to a conflict” cannot be deemed legitimate targets for attack solely on that basis.

Since October of last year, Hezbollah and Israel have repeatedly exchanged fire, especially after Hezbollah expressed solidarity with the Palestinians in light of the Gaza conflict. In late September, Israel announced a “new phase” in its military strategy and escalated operations against Hezbollah to ensure safety in northern Israel.

Following a bombing campaign and a “limited” ground incursion into Lebanon, which followed a series of handheld electronic explosions leading to numerous casualties, it is widely believed that Israeli intelligence was behind these incidents, although Israel has not confirmed or denied its involvement. The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that nearly 2,500 people have lost their lives due to Israeli attacks on Lebanon as of Saturday.
