In a response to the recent Israeli killings of the heads of Hamas and Hezbollah, along with an Iranian general stationed in Lebanon, Iran launched multiple salvos of missiles. According to Iranian media reports, the IRGC stated that Fattah-2 hypersonic missiles were used in the attack to evade Israeli air defenses.
The IRGC claimed that 80-90% of the missiles fired in ‘Operation Honest Promise 2’ reached their targets, which included the Tel Nof air base near Tel Aviv and the Netsarim area close to Gaza, where they asserted that “a large number of Israeli tanks” were destroyed.
Additionally, Iran claimed to have incapacitated several Israeli F-35 fighters at the Nevatim air base, located between Beersheba and the Dead Sea.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) assessed that approximately 180 missiles were launched towards Israel, noting that “a few hits” had been recorded. The IDF reported that most missiles were successfully intercepted, with the only casualty being a Palestinian man who died due to a missile fragment falling near Jericho in the West Bank.
This recent attack surpassed the size and scope of Iran's previous strike in April, during which numerous ballistic missiles and drones targeted Israel in retaliation for an airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
Hypersonic missiles can travel at speeds ranging from five to 25 times the speed of sound. Iran revealed its first hypersonic missile, the Fattah-1, in June, followed by the Fattah-2 version in November. Neither of these missiles had been used in combat prior to this incident.
Tehran described the missile launch as a response to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, who was killed in Tehran last July. Iran also referenced the recent killings of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC Major General Abbas Nilforoshan in Lebanon.
In the wake of these events, Israel has pledged to retaliate, while Iran has warned that any further attacks will be met with increased force.
