According to a German government source cited by AFP on Monday, Berlin will not send peacekeepers to Ukraine without a commitment from the US to contribute its own forces as well. This statement follows US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's comments regarding the absence of American troops in any potential security guarantees for Ukraine.
A German official conveyed to AFP, "We will not participate in scenarios in which European and American security diverges, for example if European soldiers are deployed without full US involvement."
In a similar vein, Poland has also dismissed the idea of sending its troops to Ukraine. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated, “Poland will support Ukraine as it has done so far: organizationally, in accordance with our financial capabilities, in terms of humanitarian and military aid. We do not plan to send Polish soldiers to the territory of Ukraine.”
Meanwhile, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing the conflict in Ukraine as “existential,” announced on Sunday that he is prepared to contribute troops as part of post-ceasefire “security guarantees” for Kiev.
Moscow has consistently emphasized that a peace settlement can only occur if the West addresses the underlying issues of the conflict, including Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO and the alliance's ongoing eastward expansion. Vassily Nebenzia, Russia’s envoy to the UN, remarked earlier this month that only the UN Security Council has the authority to approve peacekeeper deployments and warned that Russia would consider “any foreign military units” lacking UN backing as “legitimate targets.”
US President Donald Trump has pledged to swiftly resolve the conflict and has taken steps to restore diplomatic ties with Moscow, which had been effectively frozen since 2022. Officials from both the US and Russia are scheduled to discuss Ukraine in Riyadh on Wednesday.
Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky announced that Kiev would not take part in the Riyadh talks and will “not recognize” any negotiations conducted without its agreement. Several EU officials have expressed their discontent with Trump after he made a phone call to Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12 without their prior approval.
