German MP insists Ukraine should compensate for Nord Stream attack
According to claims from US media, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky initially green-lighted the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines.

Alice Weidel, a member of the Bundestag, stated that Ukraine should be held responsible for the damage inflicted on the German economy due to the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines.

The Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which provided a significant supply of Russian gas to Germany and other Western European nations, were damaged near the Danish island of Bornholm in September 2022. Three out of the four pipelines were blown up, but no one has officially been identified as the culprit.

Recent reports from German media indicated that Berlin had issued its first arrest warrant related to the sabotage investigation, identifying a Ukrainian diver as the suspect. This individual’s last known location was reportedly in Poland but had fled to Ukraine before Polish authorities could act upon a European arrest warrant that Berlin had submitted in June.

Later, the Wall Street Journal cited sources claiming that Zelensky had initially approved the sabotage plan involving the gas pipelines.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Weidel asserted that Ukraine should compensate for the damage caused.

“The economic damage to our country caused by the demolition of Nord Stream allegedly ordered by Zelensky – and not [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, as we were led to believe – should be ‘billed’ to Ukraine,” she stated. “Any ‘aid payments’ that burden the German taxpayer should be stopped.”

Weidel’s AfD party has consistently called for an end to military support for Ukraine.

Additionally, Moscow has accused Washington of orchestrating the Nord Stream sabotage, claiming that the US stands to gain the most from the disruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe. On the other hand, Kiev continues to assert that Russia was responsible for blowing up its own pipelines.

In a recent interview, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov remarked that with the destruction of this infrastructure, Europe has lost access to affordable fuel, which is essential for economic development. He also claimed that Germany has not adequately communicated the results of its investigation and suggested that the lack of transparency might imply that the situation is being manipulated to mislead the public regarding the actual perpetrators.

Berlin, however, maintains that it is sharing information about the investigation with Russian authorities.
