Farage asserts that Reform UK's membership surpasses that of the Tories
The anti-immigration party has emerged as a significant opposition force in Britain, according to its leader, Nigel Farage.

Farage has claimed that the eurosceptic and anti-immigration Reform UK party has overtaken the Conservatives in membership numbers. The Conservative Party has refuted this, accusing Farage of manipulating the data.

The party’s website shows an online counter indicating that it has 137,165 members, while last month, the Conservative Party reported having 131,680 members eligible to vote in its leadership election.

“This is an historic moment. The youngest political party in British politics has just overtaken the oldest political party in the world,” Farage wrote on X on Thursday. “Reform UK are now the real opposition,” he added.

In response, the new Tory leader, Kemi Badenoch, accused Farage of "manipulating" his supporters. “It’s not real. It’s a fake [clock] coded to tick up automatically. We’ve been watching the back end for days and can also see they’ve just changed the code to link to a different site as people point this out,” she stated on X. “Farage doesn’t understand the digital age. This kind of fakery gets found out pretty quickly.”

Farage countered by offering to conduct an independent audit of membership claims. “We understand you are bitter, upset and angry that we are now the second biggest party in British politics, and that the Conservative brand is dying under your leadership,” he replied to Badenoch. He also noted, “It’s an open secret at CCHQ that your membership numbers are fake,” referring to the Conservative Party's main office.

Farage gained prominence as a leader in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union. In 2018, he founded the Brexit Party, which later became Reform UK.

The Conservative Party has faced damage to its public image due to a series of scandals and ongoing internal disputes, including four Tory prime ministers from 2016 to 2024.

Recently, the Tories experienced a historic loss in the July parliamentary election, losing power to the Labour Party. Badenoch was elected as party leader last month, succeeding Rishi Sunak.
