Explosion Occurs in Downtown Cologne

In a Monday statement, Cologne police disclosed that the explosion took place around 5:45 AM that day, injuring a 53-year-old man. The blast also caused significant damage to the exterior doors and windows of the building near the site of the incident.
“On the basis of police video surveillance records, the police are searching for a man that is believed to be connected with the act, and who ran toward Friesenplatz after the explosion,” the statement reads. The suspect was described as wearing a white-and-blue coat, dark pants, and sneakers.
According to the police, the area around the crime scene remains sealed off as investigators continue their work.
Earlier reports from various media outlets indicated that the explosion occurred outside the Vanity Club nightclub.
Local news sources mentioned that a small fire ignited immediately after the explosion, but it had been extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.
EXPRESS.DE quoted local resident Santo Sposito, who claimed to have witnessed several individuals fleeing the scene in the moments following the incident.
Bild released what appears to be CCTV footage showing the moments leading up to the blast. The footage captures a man placing a bag outside the Vanity Club, then igniting an unidentified object and tossing it into the bag, which subsequently explodes.
